What does the Google Professional Cloud Architect exam test in 2026?

Google Cloud's Professional Cloud Architect certification evaluates whether you can translate business and technical requirements into secure, reliable, efficient, cost-effective cloud solutions. The current exam guide extends beyond product selection into enterprise strategy, migrations, hybrid and multicloud architecture, implementation, operations, and Google Cloud's Well-Architected Framework. It also includes current generative-AI platform topics, so an older study checklist is not enough for a Google Professional Cloud Architect study guide in 2026.

For the standard exam, Google currently lists 50–60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions in two hours. Each exam includes two case studies, which account for 20–30% of the questions. There are no formal prerequisites, although Google recommends more than three years of industry experience, including more than one year designing and managing solutions with Google Cloud. The certification is valid for two years.

Google also offers a separate, shorter renewal exam to eligible active credential holders. First-time candidates and people whose certification has expired take the standard exam. Do not mix a renewal-exam guide with standard-exam preparation.

Current Professional Cloud Architect domains

The current standard exam guide weights six sections:

  • Designing and planning a cloud solution architecture: about 25%;
  • Managing and provisioning a cloud solution infrastructure: about 17.5%;
  • Designing for security and compliance: about 17.5%;
  • Analyzing and optimizing technical and business processes: about 15%;
  • Managing implementation: about 12.5%; and
  • Ensuring solution and operations excellence: about 12.5%.

The domains overlap. A case-study answer may need to satisfy business continuity, data sovereignty, latency, identity, operational effort, and cost at the same time.

How to prepare by architecture decision

Start with requirements, not services

Separate functional requirements from non-functional requirements. Record availability, recovery, performance, security, compliance, data residency, integration, growth, operational skill, and financial constraints. Then choose an architecture and document its trade-offs.

Use the Well-Architected pillars—operational excellence, security, reliability, performance optimization, cost optimization, and sustainability—as a review lens. A technically possible design is not necessarily the best business design.

Compare compute, data, and network options

Build decision tables for Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Run, and Cloud Run functions. Compare object, file, relational, analytical, and globally distributed data needs. Map VPC design, Shared VPC, load balancing, hybrid connectivity, peering, routing, and Private Service Connect to realistic constraints.

Do not memorize a product catalogue. For every service choice, identify the workload fit, limitation, migration impact, security boundary, operational burden, and cost implication.

Include AI architecture from the current guide

The current outline references Gemini models, Model Garden, Agent Builder or Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform concepts, AI Hypercomputer, and controls for securing AI workloads. Study these in an architecture context: data integration, model selection, training or serving infrastructure, governance, sensitive-data protection, and cost. Verify naming in the latest guide because Google Cloud product names evolve.

Design security and operations together

Review IAM, organization-folder-project hierarchy, separation of duties, organization policy, VPC Service Controls, Cloud KMS, Workload Identity Federation, service-account impersonation, software supply-chain security, logs, monitoring, profiling, alerts, release management, testing, and production reliability.

Security answers should identify the principal, resource, trust boundary, policy scope, data path, and audit evidence. Reliability answers should include observable service objectives and a tested recovery mechanism.

A six-week Google Cloud Architect study plan

Week 1: outline and baseline

Download the current exam guide. Take a diagnostic, then map every uncertain item to one of the six sections. Review the current case studies listed by Google before doing timed practice.

Week 2: core architecture

Design a web application, asynchronous processing system, analytics platform, and hybrid workload. Compare compute, storage, database, and networking alternatives for each.

Week 3: migration and enterprise design

Create a migration sequence covering discovery, dependencies, network readiness, data movement, licensing, testing, rollback, and business continuity. Include organization structure and centralized governance.

Week 4: security, compliance, and AI

Apply least privilege, data protection, policy controls, auditability, and software supply-chain safeguards. Add one generative-AI requirement and decide how models, data, compute, and security controls fit the architecture.

Week 5: implementation and operations

Practise infrastructure as code, deployment, API management, observability, incident diagnosis, quality controls, and cost optimization. Use small hands-on exercises while setting budgets and removing resources afterward.

Week 6: case studies and full mock

For each official case study, summarize business goals, technical constraints, risks, and likely trade-offs on one page. Then complete a two-hour simulation and review both wrong and guessed answers against official documentation.

A case-study question method

  1. Identify the stakeholder and business outcome.
  2. Separate mandatory constraints from preferences.
  3. Locate the existing environment and migration stage.
  4. Eliminate options that violate security, reliability, or data requirements.
  5. Compare operational effort, performance, and total cost.
  6. Select the simplest option that satisfies all material requirements.

Avoid choosing a familiar Google Cloud service before reading the qualifier. Terms such as least operational overhead, global consistency, existing licenses, or minimal migration disruption often decide between otherwise valid options.
