What is the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam?

The AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C03 exam validates the ability to design AWS solutions that are secure, resilient, high-performing, and cost-optimized. It is aimed at people performing a solutions-architect role, so an effective SAA-C03 study guide must focus on architecture decisions rather than isolated service definitions.

AWS lists 65 questions in 130 minutes. Fifty questions affect the score and 15 are unscored; the unscored items are not identified. Question formats include multiple choice and multiple response, and unanswered questions are scored as incorrect. AWS reports results on a 100–1,000 scale with 720 as the minimum passing score.

SAA-C03 domains and weighting

The current official AWS exam guide assigns:

  • Design Secure Architectures: 30%;
  • Design Resilient Architectures: 26%;
  • Design High-Performing Architectures: 24%; and
  • Design Cost-Optimized Architectures: 20%.

These domains overlap in realistic questions. A design can be resilient but unnecessarily expensive, secure but operationally difficult, or fast but poorly matched to the workload. Study the trade-offs between options rather than expecting one AWS service to be the answer every time.

Build an AWS SAA-C03 study plan

Step 1: learn the architecture vocabulary

Be able to explain availability, durability, elasticity, fault isolation, recovery objectives, loose coupling, horizontal scaling, and the shared responsibility model. Tie each term to an architecture, not only a definition.

Step 2: map common workloads to service families

Build comparison tables for:

  • compute and orchestration;
  • object, block, and file storage;
  • relational, key-value, document, cache, and analytical data stores;
  • synchronous and asynchronous integration;
  • public, private, hybrid, and cross-account connectivity; and
  • identity, encryption, logging, and detection controls.

For each option, record when it fits, the constraint that rules it out, and the cost or operational consequence.

Step 3: practise with small architectures

Draw a web application, event-processing workload, data pipeline, backup strategy, and hybrid network. Introduce one requirement at a time: multi-Region recovery, private connectivity, unpredictable traffic, low latency, or cost limits. Then revise the design and explain why.

Hands-on work in an AWS account can make the service relationships concrete, but monitor usage and budgets carefully. You do not need to deploy an expensive environment to understand the decision path.

How to answer SAA-C03 scenario questions

Read the final requirement before evaluating the design. Identify:

  1. the workload and current architecture;
  2. the failure, security, performance, or cost constraint;
  3. the operational qualifier, such as least effort or most cost-effective; and
  4. the option that satisfies all material constraints.

Eliminate answers that solve only one part of the problem. If two choices appear technically possible, the question usually contains a qualifier that separates them.

A four-phase practice exam strategy

Baseline

Take a timed SAA-C03 mock after an initial pass through the official domains. The goal is to find decision gaps, not to establish a final readiness score.

Domain correction

Review every uncertain or incorrect item. Link the architecture decision to the relevant AWS documentation or Well-Architected guidance. Create one concise rule, then test where that rule stops applying.

Mixed scenarios

Use rotated question sets that mix the four domains. Real architecture choices rarely announce which domain they belong to.

Full simulation

Complete 65 questions in 130 minutes without external references. Review your pace, multi-response accuracy, and the services or patterns repeatedly confused.

Common SAA-C03 preparation mistakes

  • Memorising product descriptions without comparing design constraints.
  • Ignoring operational overhead when the prompt asks for minimal management.
  • Treating every resilient design as multi-Region when a simpler option meets the requirement.
  • Choosing the lowest unit price without considering data transfer, request patterns, or total architecture cost.
  • Repeating familiar questions until the answer is recognized rather than understood.
