What is on the CompTIA Network+ N10-009 exam?
CompTIA Network+ N10-009 covers networking concepts, network implementation, network operations, network security, and network troubleshooting. The exam allows up to 90 questions in 90 minutes and may include multiple-choice, multiple-response, drag-and-drop, and performance-based questions. CompTIA lists a passing score of 720 on a 100–900 scale.
An effective Network+ N10-009 study guide should combine concepts with diagrams, command output, and troubleshooting. Memorising port numbers without understanding packet flow will not prepare you for a misconfigured route, wireless interference, or a performance-based scenario.
Build the network foundation first
Be able to sketch and explain:
- OSI and TCP/IP models;
- IPv4 addressing and subnet boundaries;
- IPv6 structure and common address types;
- switching, routing, NAT, DNS, DHCP, and NTP;
- wired, wireless, WAN, and cloud connectivity; and
- common ports, protocols, and encrypted alternatives.
Use packet flow as the organizing idea. When a client reaches an application, identify how it receives configuration, resolves a name, finds a gateway, traverses network devices, and establishes a session.
Study N10-009 as five operational skills
Networking concepts
Learn the models and protocols well enough to locate a failure. Practise subnetting by hand until network, broadcast, and usable ranges can be found under time.
Network implementation
Compare routing, switching, wireless, physical media, transceivers, and installation considerations. Choose a technology from distance, bandwidth, environment, redundancy, and security requirements.
Network operations
Cover documentation, monitoring, configuration management, high availability, disaster recovery, and organizational procedures. Networks must be maintainable as well as connected.
Network security
Study segmentation, secure protocols, authentication, hardening, common attacks, and physical controls. Explain where a control belongs and which threat it reduces.
Network troubleshooting
Follow a repeatable process. Gather symptoms, establish a theory, test it, plan the fix, implement safely, verify full functionality, and document the result. Jumping to a familiar command without forming a theory creates avoidable errors.
Commands and evidence to practise
Recognize what information can be obtained from tools such as ipconfig or ifconfig, ping, tracert or traceroute, nslookup or dig, netstat, arp, and route-display commands. Understand the evidence each tool provides and its limitations.
Build small cases: a wrong gateway, DNS failure, duplicate address, blocked port, VLAN mismatch, weak wireless signal, duplex problem, or exhausted DHCP scope. Decide which observation would confirm or reject the theory.
Network+ performance-based question preparation
Practise with diagrams and simulations that require you to:
- place devices and controls correctly;
- configure addressing or wireless settings;
- interpret cable or interface symptoms;
- match protocols and ports;
- correct a routing or switching fault; and
- choose monitoring or recovery actions.
After each exercise, explain why the final state meets the requirement. Random trial and error may reach a working answer without building transferable skill.
A five-week Network+ plan
Week 1: protocols, addressing, and subnetting
Create daily subnet drills and trace several common application flows.
Week 2: implementation
Study media, switching, routing, wireless, WAN, virtualization, and cloud networking.
Week 3: operations and security
Connect documentation, monitoring, availability, segmentation, identity, and hardening.
Week 4: troubleshooting and PBQs
Work from symptoms and command output. Practise the troubleshooting methodology until it is automatic.
Week 5: timed practice and correction
Take a full N10-009 mock, analyze every weak objective, then retest with rotated questions.
Common Network+ preparation mistakes
- Learning acronyms without seeing them in a network path.
- Avoiding subnetting until the final week.
- Treating commands as answers instead of evidence-gathering tools.
- Ignoring documentation, recovery, and change control.
- Repeating one practice test until its wording is familiar.
